MARINE TO RUN 163-MILE DESERT TERRAIN ULTRA MARATHON TO RAISE FUNDS FOR 03XX FOUNDATION

Thomas Karlick trains for the Trans-Pecos Ultra with 03XX Foundation

Thomas Karlick, a USMC infantry veteran, will run 163 miles of desert terrain in one of only two U.S. adventure style ultra marathons, to raise $10,000 for 03XX Foundation. Traveling over 25 miles a day for 7 days, Karlick finds solace as an endurance athlete, using the sport of running as a coping mechanism to battle PTSD. Individual supporters are encouraged to sponsor a mile (163 total), and corporate support per stage (6 total). Details further below.

ABOUT THE RACE:

Thomas will represent 03XX Foundation during The Trans-Pecos Ultra, a 6-stage, 7 day foot race over 163 miles. This self-supported, ultra marathon is a unique journey across the Big Bend region of Texas, a remote and rugged region within the Chihuahuan Desert, the third largest desert in the Western Hemisphere. The Trans-Pecos (pronounced peh-kus) is an adventure race, the only one of it’s kind within the state of Texas and one of only two in the United States.

If you’re interested in running this race, contact Dr. Chris Herrera, mention the 03XX Foundation, and receive 20% off the entry fee!

WHERE:

Big Bend Ranch State Park, Texas
Big Bend Ranch State Park offers outdoor recreation for the truly adventurous. This remote park features rugged mountains, steep canyons, amazing views, unparalleled night skies, and solitude in a high desert setting. The park stretches along the Rio Grande in far west Texas, on the U.S.-Mexico border. The park has 238 miles of multi-use trails (for hiking, biking and horseback riding). Visitors can explore 70 miles of unmaintained dirt roads in high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles. The Rio Grande/Rio Bravo area offers great day-use access. Visitors can float, fish and hike, or drive the scenic Camino del Rio (FM 170).

ABOUT THOMAS KARLICK:

Thomas’ success story stands out among many others who weren’t so lucky. Thomas served two tours in Iraq. The first, in 2003 with 2/2 company as a SAW gunner, and again in 2004 with 2/2 STA (Surveillance Target Acquisition) Platoon, also known as the Scout Sniper Platoon, as a PIG (Professionally Instructed Gunman). During his second deployment, then a Corporal, he was awarded a NAM with combat “V” for his actions on 10 April 2004, in Jurf As Sukhr, Iraq, when his team came under heavy machine gun and small arms fire. Moving to an exposed observation point, Thomas calculated wind and range to his team leader, who effectively dispatched an enemy fighter located 920 yards away. The enemy, witnessing their comrades’ demise, ceased fire and fled.

Upon discharge from the Marine Corps, where he attained the rank of Sergeant, Thomas found himself taking the dangerous path of self-medication, but eventually found solace in running.

“It’s not about the miles that I run, but what the miles bring into my life. The only thing louder than the world around me is the conversations that go on inside my head. My time in the military taught me to always have a contingency plan. As a result, if my eyes are open I’m planning my next move. Shortly after my experiences in Iraq, I found I had no control over the thoughts that rushed in. I found that daily responsibilities and managing my emotions was too much. My mind moved too fast to keep up with and I couldn’t shut it off. The result was severe insomnia leading to self-medication,” said Thomas.

It’s not about the miles that I run, but what the miles bring into my life. The only thing louder than the world around me is the conversations that go on inside my head. My time in the military taught me to always have a contingency plan. As a result, if my eyes are open I’m planning my next move.

“It wasn’t until years later that I found peace in running. When I’m on the trail, there are only two things that I think about; the next step I’m taking and the goal I set out to accomplish in that run. It’s MY TIME out there (please excuse my Goonies reference). When I started running, I was also detoxing from alcohol and even 3 miles was a huge accomplishment (especially if I did it without throwing up or dry heaving). Even if it was only for 30 minutes those brief moments of peace lead to progress on and off the trail.”

GET INVOLVED:

The 03XX Foundation is pleased to announce our first major fundraising event out-side of the traditional Cookies block party on the Marine Corps birthday. We’re honored to have been chosen by one of our own, Thomas Karlick, a squad mate of our Executive Director from 2/2 Golf Company.

Please support Thomas on his 25th long distance race, along with 03XX Foundation. We’re avid supporters of our brothers in their post military endeavors. We believe there are many non-medicinal methods of coping for war related mental and physical wounds. We hope this is one of many events we can participate in and help others realize the greatness they bring to the world.
